Peer Support Services

Peer Support Specialist

At Monarch we understand that life poses many challenges, but achieving a successful recovery plan is something no one should have to face alone. Our Peer Support Specialist Services help structure and schedule activities for adults 18 and older with a MH/SA disability. We provide an individualized, recovery-focused service that allows participants the opportunity to learn and manage their own recovery and advocacy process through the help of a peer support specialist who has been through similar circumstances.

What is a Peer Support Specialist?
North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialists (PSS) self-identify as an individual diagnosed with a serious mental illness or substance abuse addiction who has demonstrated at least one full year in his/her own life without crisis, relapse, psychiatric inpatient treatment, substance abuse inpatient treatment or criminal justice involvement.

PSS’ assist individuals they support in recovery by focusing on their strengths, and emphasizing hope and wellness. Together they create and utilize specific personal recovery goals and develop a network of contacts and collaborative relationships (based on the experience of the PSS, or others who have had similar experiences).

Peer Support Services emphasize personal safety, self-worth, confidence, and growth. They also provide a connection to the community and development of social supports and effective communication skills.
