Monarch receives national honor for best practices in direct support staff development
Agency receives 2014 Moving Mountains Award, honored during conference in Baltimore
Today, Monarch was presented with the national 2014 Moving Mountains Best Practices Award recipient by the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) and the Research and Training Center at the University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration during the 2014 Reinventing Quality Conference held in Baltimore, MD. Aug. 3-5. Monarch CEO Dr. Peggy Terhune was recognized and accepted the award on behalf of the agency.
An organization working to enhance the status of direct support professionals, NADSP recognizes organizations, like Monarch, that use best practices in direct support staff workforce development. Those practices result in improved outcomes for the people with disabilities who are supported. Monarch was selected from among numerous award candidates for its Helping Dreams Take Flight initiative, which includes a partnership of agencies joined to create a training and certification program for direct support professionals to enhance their skills and increase the quality of care provided to the people they support.
“We are elated to be recognized in such a meaningful way by well-respected, national organizations that aim to improve the work and position of direct support staff,” said Terhune. “We are proud of the professional development initiatives we have implemented to better support the work of staff. The outcomes have not only been beneficial to those professionals, but have helped to vastly enhance the quality of life of the people we support who are directly impacted by these valuable staff members.”
Direct support professionals at Monarch work with thousands of individuals every year within their homes, day programs and communities. They are considered to be one of the agency’s most important resources, second only to the people they support. In 2008, as part of accreditation through The Council on Quality and Leadership, Monarch began using Personal Outcome Measures (POM). POMs help direct support professionals determine the individual goals and interests of the people they support. The results help direct support professionals know which areas they can maximize to better serve people supported, and were an important component in determining the recipient for the award.
