Monarch hosts groundbreaking for community garden in Albemarle Nov. 27
Monarch will host a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the development of its large community garden in Albemarle. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the garden, which is located directly behind Monarch’s Stanly Industrial Services (SIS), 730 Greenwood St., Albemarle. The community is invited to attend this free public event.
The Monarch Ability Garden Integrating Community and Land (M.A.G.I.C.A.L.) project was designed to provide a place for people to gather and learn about sustainable gardening while reaping the benefits from expanded access to locally grown healthy foods. Earlier this year, Monarch received a $7,000 award from the United Way of Stanly County for its Albemarle garden project. The local garden is one of three that Monarch is developing across the state.
Representatives from several community groups, including the county’s cooperative extension service and Stanly Community College, have participated in the garden’s progress. Plans are underway to establish a garden advisory committee comprised of people supported by Monarch, families, faith-based leaders, elected officials, area residents and representatives from various organizations within Stanly County. This effort will help to continue to foster relationships throughout the community, establish more partnerships with local agencies and to build a bridge of inclusion between the people Monarch supports and the community.
Monarch provides support statewide to thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse challenges from more than 50 North Carolina counties. Monarch is nationally accredited by The Council on Quality and Leadership and is CABHA certified. The agency is an affiliate chapter of The Arc of North Carolina and The Arc of the United States.
