Monarch observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

KiaraWebEach October, Monarch joins the observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) to raise awareness and celebrate the many contributions of America's workers with disabilities.

Reflecting the important role disability plays in workforce diversity, The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy is promoting this year’s NDEAM theme, “#InclusionWorks.”

Last year, Monarch placed nearly 180 people with disabilities in jobs across North Carolina. The company’s Individual Placement and Support – Employment (IPS) team helps people with disabilities, like Kiara Camp of Shelby, find jobs where they can succeed. Camp got her first job at age 26 with assistance from Monarch and is delighted to be employed and planning her future.

Monarch works to not only identify employment opportunities for people with disabilities, but to provide education about disability employment issues. When a workplace is welcoming of people with disabilities, employers gain needed skills and new perspectives on ways to confront challenges and achieve organizational success. Employees with disabilities gain dignity, respect and self-determination. Most importantly, society as a whole benefits from a more inclusive culture where every person is valued for his or her contributions.

“We’re doing more than just matching people with jobs; we get to know them and help them find their dream jobs,” said Monarch Employment Services Program Director Sheri Carter. “This is about careers and fulfillment, not just income. We believe that a job can help everything else fall into place.”

Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) website at
