Monarch Spotlight: Selma Smith

spotlight JulyThis month we talked to Selma Smith MA, LPC, LCASA, Intensive In-Home Services (IIHS) team lead, to learn more about the service and how Monarch is making a difference in the lives of people in Rowan County.

Tell me a little about Monarch’s IIHS.
IIHS is an enhanced 24-hour crisis based service that provides clinical treatment/first responder intervention in all settings (home, school, community) for children ages three to 20.  The children have to meet a certain criteria, one being imminent risk of out of home placement.  I believe one of the most important parts about the service is the fact that it strives to provide wrap around support to families during some of the most crucial and vulnerable times.

What is the most important aspect of IIHS?
The service is sometimes a family’s last resort in keeping their family together; therefore I believe a vital component of the treatment is to attempt to instill hope.

What has been your most rewarding or satisfying experience, or your proudest moment while working here?
IIHS is provided by a team of clinicians, which usually consists of two qualified professionals (QPs) and a licensed therapist (team lead).  As a team lead, working at Monarch, I would say that some of my proudest moments have been the ability to work together with others who also truly care about the families we support and often go over and beyond to attempt to make a difference.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I try to spend as much time as I can with my family and support system.  I also find that going to church and getting replenished is a vital key for me to avoid burnout.  I love to sing and listen to inspirational music as well as travel from time to time.  In fact, I am looking forward to going to the Bahamas sometime soon.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Many might be surprised to know that I was born in the Bahamas, which is one of my favorite places.

Overall, I believe that what I do here at Monarch is not just a job, but a “calling.”  I take pleasure in partnering with others who too have accepted that call and step up to the plate in order to take action every day.  I try to live by the life concept, as well encourage others of it, that with God all things are possible.
