N&N: River City Inspired by Upcoming Elections
River City Achievement Center in Elizabeth City is already gearing up for election season. They recently held elections to choose officers for the Monarch day program in Pasquotank County.
Gail Whitehurst, a developmental specialist, came up with the idea because River City is located next door to the local Board of Elections and they have often witnessed local candidates visiting that office during election season. She figured it would be a great opportunity for the people supported at River City to learn more about politics.
“I explained to them that we wanted a River City government and that meant any problems, concerns and new ideas would be given to the government and they would sit down, talk about it and present it back to the center with a solution,” she said.
Those who wanted to run started researching the various offices and what the duties entailed. After that, candidates began putting up signs and campaigning for a week.
At the end of the week, each candidate gave speeches and the center set up a voting booth for participants to cast their ballots. After the votes had been tallied, Whitehurst played the presidential theme song and announced the winners.
She said they were ecstatic with the process and everyone really enjoyed learning more about politics.
“I have a passion for wanting them to be involved.”
The newly elected River City officers include: President Kristoff Willis, Vice President Arthur Coston, Secretary Tjuana James, Treasurer Rochelle Henderson and Parliamentarian Brandon Christenson.
