Stories of Recovery Speaker’s Series Kicks-off in Lumberton

5-Speakers-SeriesThis month, the people we support at our in-patient detox program in Lumberton are kicking-off a Stories of Recovery Speaker’s Series with Jeff Stultz, the Central North Carolina Representative for Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christian-based twelve-step program founded by Pastors John Baker and Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, and is aimed at all “hurts, habits, and hang-ups, including but not limited to drug and alcohol addictions, sex addiction, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and people who have been sexually abused.”

Stultz did the program after struggling with an alcohol and drug addiction himself for many years. He also spent time as the leader of two different motorcycle gangs and in and out of jail as he struggled to find where he fit in. After several losses he turned to cocaine and was living homeless for a few years. Stultz thought he would never be able to change, but after turning his life around through Celebrate Recovery he is now an ordained pastor, actor and successful business owner.

Richale Reed, Monarch’s Behavioral Health Therapist, organized the event after meeting Stultz in the community.

“Jeff was my inspiration to start the whole series because I want the people we support to see they have the power to turn their lives around. This man is a pastor, actor and business owner and it is through him, and others like him who share their experience, that will give them the hope to fight addiction another day,” Reed explained.

She said that oftentimes once people go through the seven to ten day treatment they think they’ll be fine. “But I need them to understand that a detox program is just one of the first steps in recovery, and that it takes a lot of time and support to reach their goals. I always tell them that they don’t have to do this alone.”

Reed stressed that an integral component of the speaker’s series is that the people we support will be doing the set up of the room, technology, preparing the food and making beautiful gifts for each speaker.

“This for them; it is their event,” she said.

The first event will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 at Monarch's Tanglewood Arbor in Lumberton.
