Monarch Spotlight: Lee Fandel
What is your title?
Business Process Analyst
Tell me about your role and how it will help with new processes at Monarch.
My role is to analyze the business processes and find ways to make them more efficient. I look to find the stress points in processes and to verify where there is a solution to make it less stressful.
What does a typical workday look like?
Right now, my typical work day consists of a lot of watching what the current processes are and asking why we are doing them this way. The current process I’m looking at is Open Access and I plan on visiting most, if not all, locations to map out how they run their Open Access program. When I’m not watching and learning the process, I’m creating flow charts and analyzing data.
What is the most important aspect of your role and why?
I think the most important aspect is understanding the processes well enough so that I could easily explain it to anyone and they would understand. The more I know about the process, the easier it is for me to relate with anyone using Open Access, to find the stress points of the process, and to try new ideas from anyone using Open Access to see if they relieve any of the stress points in the program.
What has been your most rewarding or satisfying experience, and what do you hope to accomplish while here?
The most rewarding thing for me so far is everyone I’ve met has been very receptive to the idea of my position and looking at the processes to try and become more effective overall as an organization.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Probably three things: I played college baseball, cannot drink wine, and I have five kids (3 boys and 2 girls) within five years of each other. We had a “pleasant surprise” which ended up being natural fraternal triplets (1 boy and 2 girls) 22 months ago. We were told the odds of this happening to us were 1 in 1.1 million.
What do you do when you aren't working?
If I can’t catch up on my sleep, I’m usually looking to get outside and do something, whether it be a sporting activity (golf, baseball, football, swim, etc.) or exploring the outdoors by riding bikes, hiking, or camping. If I can’t get outside, I enjoy going to the movies.
Favorite place to visit?
I like going to small cities/towns in the Northeast and Northwest of the USA. If anyone wants a great place to escape civilization and see some killer whales and other marine life, I would visit Friday Harbor on San Juan Island just north of Seattle, WA.
Movie or song that best describes you?
Tough one, as I wear a lot of different hats in my life. Probably John Candy’s character from the movie “The Great Outdoors.” I relate to his character in the movie because he is always trying to create a great family vacation by doing anything his kids ask him to do, which often ends in him embarrassing himself but making his kids very happy.
