According to the N.C. State Center for Health Statistics, Stanly County ranks 16th in the state for highest suicide rates.
“The first thing you have to realize is that the vast majority of people who do this are struggling with mental illness,” Dr. Robert McHale, a board certified psychiatrist and medical director for the Albemarle-based mental health care organization Monarch, said.
