Albemarle, NC – Monarch announced a local campaign to address the portrayal of an individual with an intellectual disability in the movie “Tropic Thunder” which opened nationwide this week. Monarch joins the efforts of The Arc of the United States and other national advocacy groups mobilizing around the use of hate-speech in referring to persons with intellectual disabilities. “Tropic Thunder” features Ben Stiller portraying “Simple Jack,” a person with an intellectual disability; this character is repeatedly referred to as a “retard,” “moron,” and “imbecile.”

Friday, February 13th marked the date for Arc of Stanly County and Monarch’s 14th Annual Project Cupid Fundraiser. The group pre sold gifts consisting of a packet of hot coco, a muffin, teddy bear, candy and a personalized greeting card which where then delivered to individuals all over Stanly County. “All of the planning and hard work is worth it to see the expressions on the face of the recipient as his or her gift is delivered” says Jackie McGowen, Chairperson for Project Cupid.

Among those playing was former Carolina Panther, Mike Minter. As a friend of Monarch, Minter spoke before the tournament and introduced a few people supported by the organization, reminding the golfers why they were playing.
