Zack Commander, a Monarch participant, receives welcome letter from Princess of Morocco
On June 6, 2010, Zack Commander, an Elizabeth City native, will be arriving in Marrakech, Morocco as a Program Leader for the Special Olympics of North America. Commander was selected to attend the first ever Special Olympics Global Congress which will take place from June 6-10, 2010. The Global Congress will convene more than 600 key stakeholders for a landmark leadership summit under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
Commander was chosen by the Special Olympics North America board members for this prestigious opportunity as a result of his advocacy efforts, his volunteer time, his many years of participation as an athlete, and his exceptional leadership and motivational skills for the program and participants. Commander has played an important part in the unparalleled growth of the Special Olympics over the past 25 years as an active participant in committee meetings and through his passionate involvement in the Games.
Individuals invited to the Special Olympic Global Congress received a welcome letter from their host, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Amina of Marrakech, Morocco. Upon arrival, Special Olympic leaders from around the world will engage in strategic planning meetings to chart the course of the future of the Games. Commander, his peers, and fellow advocates will strive to gain new perspective and insight as to how the Special Olympics can best deliver on the promise of its mission for the years ahead.
Commander is going to the Global summit with an agenda on behalf of North Carolina, “I am looking forward to improving policies and procedures for the Special Olympics Programs. I am excited about learning tactics to recruit more athletes and volunteers to participate in our state and local Special Olympics Programs.”

Today, the Special Olympics operate in more than 180 nations around the world serving 3 million athletes. But, the Special Olympics are about much more than training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities.
